Dollhouse Still Open for Business

Dollhouse Season 2: Hope is Still Alive!

Whedon related blogs and entertainment sites have been abuzz with reports that Dollhouse’s chances for a second season are bleak. Or pretty good. Depending on who you talk to….

Whedon himself reported that he is hopeful for the future of the series. He says he is proud of the material coming out and can’t say much more. I’m sure he, as well as all his fans, are a bit gun-shy when it comes to network television. Can we say he’s cautiously optimistic?

Usually in these cases, fans of the series start calling and e-mailing everyone they know to watch the series to bring the ratings up. Well, unfortunately, unless you are bosom buds with someone who has a Nielsen device in their home, that won’t make much of a difference. [Editor's Note from Tabz: Actually, it's been confirmed that Hulu and DVR numbers ARE being looked at by the networks - so please if you watch, watch/record! To a lesser extent DVD pre-sales may factor in.] For those of us in Canada, those efforts may be even more useless because in my experience the American network bosses care very little about what us Canadians are into (Corner Gas, anyone?).

There has also been some confusion over the mysterious 13th episode.  My understanding is that it is a stand-alone episode and will not likely air on the network (Joss says the jury is still out), but it will be part of the DVD release.

In any event, I do still think you should check out the series … while it’s still around …

Buffy Movie: Not in the foreseeable future

buffyScifiwire.com was host to a pretty heated discussion over the past couple of days with regards to the rumor that a Buffy movie might be in the works.  Wait, haven’t I heard that somewhere before?

As far as I can tell, this round of rumors originated when Showbizspy.com reported that SMG was in talks to reprise her role as Buffy in a movie, perhaps as a mother.  According to Scifiwire, Joss Whedon responded, “Not gonna happen.”

The responses to the Scifiwire post were immediate and passionate.  Some responders told us to ‘read between the lines’ of Whedon’s comments.  Others are sick of the rumors all together.  Still others comment that there is too much bad blood between SMG and the other Buffy team members to put a project like that together.

In my heart, I have been waiting for a Buffy movie since 2003.  However, my head keeps reading updates about busy Joss has been.  In his most recent appearances he discussed how difficult it was to finish the commentary for Dr. Horrible because of his work on Dollhouse.  The guy is busy.  Also, he’s been pretty forthcoming with the public in the past about his upcoming projects.

So, naive as it may be, I’m going to … wait for it … believe him!

“I appreciate your thoughts on the matter. In fact, I encourage you to always challenge me when you feel it’s appropriate. You should never be cowed be authority. Except, of course, in this instance when I am clearly right and you are clearly wrong.” – Giles

Tabz and Kim’s Epic Conversation (Angel Vs. Spike) Continues on Happyland…

This part 2 of 3, so if you’d like to hear us get a little more indepth about Angel and Spike and which vampire is “better” make sure to listen to Happyland!

Paleyfest is for (Joss) Lovers – Dr. Horrible Edition

Last night, for the first time in Paleyfest history, they recognized a web series and, of course, that series was Dr. Horrible.

For those of you who don’t know Paleyfest is sponsored by the Paley Center for Media (formerly known as The Museum of Television & Radio (MT&R) and The Museum of Broadcasting). The event is fairly corporate in feel, it’s held at the Arclight in Hollywood and price for non-members is $45 a head. Last year I attended the much touted Buffy Reunion panel and tonight’s event was much the same: only for Dr. Horrible.

The event opens with kind of a teaser for the Paleyfest. A video showing clips of previous panels and what the Paleyfest represents. Then someone usually introduces the evening, and then Joss got up and introduced the screening of Dr. Horrible (all three acts).

It was fun to see Dr. Horrible on the big screen. I believe all of the acting (subtle movements you may have caught on the smallish side on the internet and then your home DVD) is only enhanced by the larger screen. I also noticed more of the background elements (like there’s a Caring Hands poster in the hall where Captain Hammer is giving his speech in Act 3). People sang along with most of the songs and, unlike last year with the Buffy panel’s screening of Once More with Feeling I didn’t hear a bunch of complaining about the audience singing along.

Then it was time for the panel. Matt Roush introduced the panel members (who had been sitting in the audience): Maurissa Tancharoen, Jed Whedon, Zack Whedon, Felicia Day, Nathan Fillion and Joss Whedon. During the first couple moments of everyone being on stage Maurissa announced she and Jed were getting married this Saturday (congrats guys). They also talked about how they originally thought Dr. Horrible was going to be a really small production. Jed quipped that they had asked “so are we going to do it in your living room or ours”. Then Joss decided to ask around. The head of Universal gave them the backlot “for a song,” Joss said. To which Nathan replied, “Freeze Ray?”

Joss then said that he was in talks with a lot of people about getting Dr. Horrible made, but no one was really moving on it. So finally “I made a deal with myself,” Joss said. “I gave myself really good terms.” As a result, as most Horrible fans know, the actors and crew worked for nearly nothing until Doctor Horrible started making money.

Now, last year at the Paleyfest Buffy Reunion Joss was late because of shooting Dr. Horrible and he reveled he had been at the laundry mat wrapping up filming when he ducked in the bathroom, put on a suit and ran down to the panel. Maurissa said, “It was a nice suit.”

Nathan continued the “feud” with Neil Patrick Harris by saying, “”I can’t even tell you guys how much joy it brings to my heart that… Neil couldn’t make it.” Roush commented to say that the only reason NPH wasn’t here was because he was out of the country.

The Whedon Bros and Maurissa didn’t give any specifics about the Dr. Horrible Sequel everyone keeps asking about, though they did comment that they had talked a lot about it. Apparently Dollhouse writer meetings have had a lot of “sidebars” talking about Dr. Horrible. The Whedons said they’ve talked about doing it in a different form (theatrically, on the internet again, legitimate theater). Then Joss “asked the audience” what form they’d like to see it. “Puppets?” He asked. To a rallying applause from the audience.

Matt asked Jed about the music and if it was “Sweeney Todd” in nature. Jed agreed saying, “Definitely a Sondheim influence because it’s unavoidable if you’re writing something that’s good.” Which garnered more applause from the audience (apparently there were many Sondheim fans, which made me happy).

A Letter of Respect for Neil Patrick Harris

celebrity-pictures-harris-more-chicksYeah, this could be a love letter.  However, I’m married, and Neil is gay, so that makes a love letter, well, complicated.  Don’t get me wrong, if I ever had the opportunity to give Neil a gigantic bear hug, I’d giggle like a 9 year-old school girl.  Nonetheless, I’m a grownup and Neil is a professional.  I’m sticking to a letter of respect.  He’s listed this week in Out.com’s Power 50 and recently won a Streamy and an A-List award.  So here, listed in no particular order, are some of the reasons (besides Dr. Horrible) I believe Neil Patrick Harris to be a fine human being.

Theatre Work
I was a girl when “Doogie Howser, MD” was on the air.  I noticed something special about him then.  Aside from New Kids on the Block, I only had eyes for Neil.  As I grew older, so too did Neil.  Though he had many television appearances and voice acting gigs after Doogie, he was largely out of the public eye.  He spent a good chunk of his time away from our television sets on the stage.  As passionate as I am about the Whedon universe, I am even more so about the theatre.  Having listened to several recordings of Neil’s musical roles (Assassins, Sweeney Todd), my admiration of Neil as a professional performer has grown exponentially.  This summer he returns to the stage in “The Importance of Being Earnest.”  Thank Dionysus!

Coming Out
I just think the way that Neil acknowledged his sexuality publicly was so classy.  He answers all questions posed about his relationship with partner David Burtka respectfully and tastefully. ‘Nuff said.

He Does Magic!
Okay, I’ve never been a big fan of magicians.  Frankly, they kinda creep me out.  When Neil does magic, though, there are no wind machines, sparkles or girls in sequins.  He’s relaxed and natural.  I can get behind that kind of magic.

Natural Comedian
Let me be clear: comedy is hard.  If there is a natural talent that exists for comedy, Neil has it.  I do believe that he also works very hard to be funny.  I think as he has matured, Neil’s comedy skill has also become more powerful.  He has a very natural sense of humour, probably because he is so comfortable in his own skin.

He Can Laugh at Himself!
Too often people in Hollywood take themselves too seriously.  If you doubt NPH can poke fun at his own image, see Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle and Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay.

Incredible Singer
Aside from the obvious evidence in Dr. Horrible, Neil has sung in several different situations.  The strongest showing for me is his work on Sondheim musicals.  Sondheim writes some of the most difficult music out there for singers, and Neil vocalizes it with such grace it is astounding.

Charity Work
He has supported charities for AIDS, Cancer, Children, Creative Arts, Depression and Suicide, Education, Gay/Lesbian Support, Health, Homelessness and Hunger.  You know, to name a few.

I could go on, but I’ve babbled long enough.  I must rest.  Or play Wii.  Either way, I’ll be thinking about a much more shallow reason to appreciate NPH ;)
