Joss’d Episode #052 – Beware of the Lizards

Posted by Tabz On April - 14 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Tabz and Kim return and talk about comics (including the Guild, Terminator and Angel). Congrats to Felicia Day & Sean Becker for winning awards at the Streamys! Tabz inserts Doctor Who love, but Kim brings them back to topic – including Glee! The gals squee and discuss NPH and Joss’ upcoming episode (coming May 18th). Tabz predicts Heidi will appear, and then she did! The Liane stumps us with a V trivia question. Then Kim and Tabz return to discuss V, with help from some LJ friends. Tabz also alienates all of the Joss’d fans (ha, alien.. see what we did there). Larissa shares another Whedonverse Question! Tabz and Kim also discuss the question. Tabz makes a plea for everyone to watch Chuck when it comes back in May. Then they introduce the fan song, “Twixt My Nethers” by the uber talented Tally. Of course, Liane gives the answer to her trivia and then the awesome “Twixt My Nethers” song.

Whedonverse Questions

How do you feel about the Xander/Anya relationship? In Doublemeat Palace, did Halfrek have a point about the way Xander treated Anya? Do you think that if Xander had gone through with the wedding, he and Anya would have had a happy marriage? If Anya had lived (*sob*), do you think they’d have gotten back together?

My sister and I got into a pretty heated discussion about them earlier (short story – she loves them, I don’t [that is, I adore both characters, particularly Anya, but I don't like them as a couple]) and I’d like to find out how other fans feel.

Click here to read the Question and add your own thoughts!

Thanks to Heidi, Robin, John, Rochelle & Faith (the Vampire Slayer) for reading the answers!

Joss Whedon, you know, that guy we like, is apparently on the short-list to direct a super-hero movie.

Join Tabz, Kim, and Heidi celebrate that we’ve passed 50 episodes! And they also rejoice that Felicia Day has a SyFy miniseries coming soon! Tabz corrects herself, but once again she’s now outdated – Castle HAS been renewed (as of yesterday). Preorder the next Castle Book! Liane brings trivia from Chaos Bleeds, of the sweet kind! Heidi looks at Ethan Rayne (our favorite British bad guy). Then Heidi, Kim and Tabz discuss Chaos Bleeds Playstation 2 Game (also Xbox and GameCube). We start a new segment, Whedonverse Questions, with Larissa! We end the episode with some little fandom news and, of course, the answer to Liane’s trivia.

This episode was edited by the very awesome John N.

Zack’d #050 – Felicia Day is Still Awesome Part 2

Posted by Tabz On March - 16 - 2010 1 COMMENT

Tabz, Kim and Andrew discuss what TV shows will be picked up for the fall and what are likely to not be renewed (sorry guys!). Zack Whedon gets a shout out for being the best writer in the world and how we’re changing the name to Zack’d. Tabz explains why she loves House, MD and Andrew warns against fan-girl-ism. Liane gives us another Guild question to puzzle over. Heidi gives a character sketch of Zaboo (The Guild). We have another panel recording from Farpoint Convention, Felicia Day had just had lunch with a guy who bid $5000 for the lunch with Felicia in the charity auction. Felicia discusses her knitting, Buffy, motorcycles and accents. Kim, Andrew and Tabz finish up the episode discussing more TV shows are up for renewal next fall (or not). Tabz and Kim geek out about Supernatural and why you should be watching. We also present the most awesome Gmail feature we wish we had:

Joss’d #049 – Felicia Day is Still Awesome

Posted by Tabz On March - 6 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

fdJoin Kim, Tabz and Andrew as they talk about how awesome Felicia Day is (still) and how to win all of your enemies over by buying a copy of The Guild on DVD. Liane gives us some sweet trivia. Heidi brings us a Guild “Character of the Episode” for Clara. Thanks to David for our awesome panel recording of Felicia Day from the Farpoint Convention! The Mars Effect gets pimped out (and Tabz makes a HIMYM reference). Tabz gets boxed in and forgot about “Big Bang Theory”. Andrew reads some Joss’d fanmail (thanks Hammond!) and Kim & Tabz answer it after dissolving into giggles.

Joss’d #047 – Buffy had a Movie?

Posted by Tabz On February - 4 - 2010 1 COMMENT

Tabz and Kim discuss (non-spoilerly) the last episode of Dollhouse and the lack of fandom excitement. Liane like totally lays down some awesome trivia. Tabz schools Kim in Buffy the movie (okay not really) and Heidi introduces us to Pike (no, not Spike). Wrapping it up with some podcasty news, Tabz totally gets the email address for the show wrong, but Liane saves the day with the answer to her trivia question!

The Parasol Protectorate Prevails

A Review In Which I Utterly Fail To Express How Truly Awesome This Novel Is
SOULLESS by Gail Carriger

SOULLESS by Gail Carriger

I have on occasion expressed my fascination with the Victorian era and works of steampunk before. Furthermore, my predilection for tales of all things undead is renowned. So you can imagine my delight when I heard about a new novel that blended these two great tastes together. That novel is SOULLESS by Gail Carriger and I have to say it does not disappoint.

Not only does Ms. Carriger bring to life a believable Victorian landscape populated by vampires, werewolves, and ghosts (oh my!) but it is witty, funny, action-packed, romantic, and sexy. I could probably toss in more adjectives like dramatic, suspenseful, and glamorous, but I don’t want to over do it, even though those are still wholly accurate.

Without spoiling too much, the story begins when Miss Alexia Tarabotti, a spinster of Italian heritage, finds herself quite rudely accosted by a vampire of questionable breeding while she was attending a soiree. Honestly, she was only looking for something to eat, and apparently she wasn’t the only one. Not only was the unexpected vampire quite uncouth (how dare he attack her when they hadn’t even been properly introduced), but he was unaware of Alexia’s preternatural ability to negate the supernatural, thus rendering said vampire, um, how shall I say it, impotent? Yes, that’ll do.

After she dispatches her attacker with her trusty parasol and hair stakes, agents of Queen Victoria’s Bureau of Unnatural Registry arrive to investigate. BUR agents Lord Connall Maccon and Professor Randolph Lyall, who happen to be werewolves of high social standing, are well aware of her abilities and her frustrating habit of getting into trouble. Thus begins the mystery she finds herself in, which only gets more intricate and interesting as it progesses.

Along the way we meet her mother and step-family, her best friend Ivy Hisselpenny, the flamboyant vampire Lord Akeldama, and a cast of other incredible characters. The story also has the standard accoutrements associated with steampunk, like dirigibles, steam engines, multi-purpose goggles/spectacles, and diabolical machines built for nefarious scientific experiments. These are not merely scattered throughout as fashionable props, but are expertly woven into an exciting tale.

I will definitely not spoil the ending, but I found it to be a satisfying conclusion to a fantasic first look at the life of an extraordinary woman. I am eagerly awaiting the next two books in the trilogy, both of which arrive this year. CHANGELESS hits shelves on March 30, 2010. (I’ve already pre-ordered it.) The third book, BLAMELESS, is due in September.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough! 10 out of 10! You can find the paperback in bookstores everywhere, and I was also very happy to see it is available in different eBook formats. I really wish there was an audio book version, especially with the production quality that J. Daniel Sawyer’s ArtisticWhispers Productions presented with the first chapter as a podcast teaser. You should definitely give it a listen, and like me, I think you’ll immediately be hooked.
